  1. The Ironman Triathlon World Champion-
  2. ship is the toughest triathlon of all. It was
  3. started by a couple of U.S. Navy officers, in
  4. 1978. It takes place in Hawaii, and consists
  5. of a 2.4 mile rough-water swim off Waikiki
  6. beach, a 112-mile bike race around the
  7. island of Oahu, and running the 26.2-mile
  8. Honolulu Marathon -- one after another! In
  9. her first year of competing in triathlons,
  10. Paula tackled the Ironman. With hardly any
  11. training, she finished third! Through 1994,
  12. she has won the womenΓÇÖs competition in
  13. the Ironman seven times, including the last
  14. four years in a row. In 1988, she set a
  15. course record of 9 hours, 1 minute, 1
  16. second, breaking the previous record by 34
  17. minutes!
